A teen who was climbing a tree was killed when
the branch he was on snapped, hurtling him to the ground and causing fatal
injuries.
On Friday evening, Jack Lewis, 16, a junior
at Oakland Technical High School in Oakland, California, was climbing a tree
with some friends during a birthday party at Lake Merritt.
Several youths were climbing the tree outside
the entrance to Children's Fairyland when a large limb broke, and Lewis
fell to the ground, reports the Contra Costa Times.
Reportedly, the boy's neck was broken.
Oakland Tech Principal Staci Ross-Morrison
described the teen as 'well-liked, energetic and charismatic.'
He was a member of the school's rowing team and
active in other school activities.
'Jack was a amazing team member. He always
brought a great attitude and was one of the best rowers on the team. It is
terrible to see him go. He will always be loved and remembered,' friend Noah
Boonin wrote on Instagram.
'I am at a complete loss for words. Jack always
had such a great vibe and was smiling whenever i saw him. You will be missed,
Rowing at tech will never be the same,' wrote another friend.
