NIMC OFFICIALS, JOBSEEKERS CLASH IN MAKURDI
Pandemonium yesterday erupted between officials of National Identity Management Commission, NIMC, and applicants seeking recruitment into the commission due to alleged sharp practices uncovered during the exercise in Makurdi, the Benue State capital.
It was gathered at the scene that the fracas ensued for several hours before normalcy was restored after several persons had sustained injuries while others had their clothes torn to shreds.
Eyewitnesses who pleaded anonymity told Sunday Mirror that trouble started when a 300-level Psychology student of Benue State University, Samuel Tersoo Gyungu, tried for several days to be enroled but his efforts were thwarted along with others who came from various villages across the three senatorial districts of the state.
After unsuccessful attempts, he decided to arrive at the centre of the registration at 5 a.m. yesterday alongside with other applicants who were given numbers serially up to 100, according to the facilitator (names withheld). The list was initially being followed serially until later when the facilitator allegedly switched to another list and people were coming from the backdoor, which eventually sparked off protests from the public leading to free for all.
It was learnt that the atmosphere became rowdy among officials and applicants as the entrance into the premises was barricaded and security agents were later brought in to maintain the peace.
Speaking on the issue, Mr. Joseph Tatyough, a civil servant stated that, “all was going on smoothly until a female facilitator (names withheld) started bringing in people through the backdoor and when we protested she slapped the youngman who was very vocal and bitter and fight ensued leading to injuries and tearing of the man’s T-shirt.
When contacted, Head of National Identity Management Commission’s Benue State office, Cosmas Idoko, said he would not comment but subsequently referred clarification to Abuja headquarters.
Efforts to get the comments of the state Police Command’s Public Relations Officer, Mr. Austin Ezeani, on the uproar were futile as several calls on his mobile line could not be returned.
